Establish a family Emergency/Disaster Plan
Every family needs to plan for emergencies or disasters that might happen.

Sit down with your family and discuss:
1. What types of emergencies or disasters might happen;
2. What you should do to prepare (like create a family emergency kit); and
3. What to do if you are asked to evacuate your home. (see "Evacuation planning")

Also, talk to your family about:
1. Where to meet away from your home in case of fire (like a neighbor's house, or at the corner of the street, etc.);
2. Where to meet outside your neighborhood if you must evacuate. You should pick a friend of relative's house; and
3. Where to call to "check in" if you become separated from your family during a disaster. You should memorize a phone number of a favorite relative who lives in another city or state. You would call this number to report where you are and where your family can find you.

Be sure your house has a smoke detector and carbon monoxide alarm.
Remember to change the batteries twice a year.
It's also a good idea to take a first aid, Stop the Bleed or CPR class so you will be prepared to help others.
