Case Study: The Authentic Storytelling Engine
Client: First Bank (via Greenroom Communications)
Role: Director & Lead Producer
The Business Problem: First Bank needed a campaign to drive commercial loan applications by connecting with local entrepreneurs and farmers on a deeply emotional level. However, the standard commercial production approach was failing. During the initial shoot for Hagler Farms, traditional field interview techniques yielded stiff, unnatural responses, threatening the entire campaign's mandate for authentic, documentary-style storytelling.
The Creative Strategy & Stakeholder Buy-In: I recognized that highly produced, static interviews were alienating our non-media-trained subjects. I pivoted the creative strategy on the floor, shifting away from a formal commercial setup to a raw, documentary-first approach. I secured buy-in from the agency to trust a less conventional, highly conversational acquisition method to capture the true voice of the customer.
The Scalable Execution:
High-EQ Directing: When the field producer struggled to break the ice, I stepped in directly. Leveraging specialized documentary techniques, I stripped away the formal interview pressure and simply walked around the barn with the farmer while rolling audio. This agile pivot captured a deeply authentic, emotional conversation that I utilized as the foundational VoiceOver for the hero edit.
Agile Production Model: To keep costs lean without sacrificing cinematic quality, I architected a highly nimble, three-person cross-functional team to handle the entire lifecycle—from on-the-ground acquisition and interviewing to post-production and editing.
Internal Capability Building: The execution was so seamless that it fundamentally shifted internal production standards at Greenroom Communications, with agency leadership actively adopting these specialized interviewing techniques for future docu-ad projects.
The ROI & Impact:
The campaign successfully drove an "emotional arrow" into the core of the bank's target demographic, resulting in massive client satisfaction and elevated brand affinity.
The creative execution was universally recognized by the industry, winning three ADDY® Awards for the campaign series.
The project secured a specialized Diversity Award for the installment featuring a Black-owned tobacco farm, proving the campaign's ability to authentically resonate across diverse market segments.
